About Fullmetal Alchemist

Fullmetal Alchemist refers to two main anime adaptations of Hiromichi Arakawa's manga:

  1. Fullmetal Alchemist (2003–2004, 51 episodes + movie Conqueror of Shamballa): This is the original anime that aired first. It follows brothers Edward Elric (the "Fullmetal Alchemist") and Alphonse Elric after a failed human transmutation ritual that cost Ed his left leg and right arm and Al his entire body (his soul now bound to a giant suit of armor). They set out on a quest to find the legendary Philosopher's Stone to restore their bodies, while uncovering dark government secrets, alchemical conspiracies, and the true cost of forbidden alchemy. The 2003 series diverges from the manga in the second half, creating its own original story and ending, which is more melancholic and philosophical.
  2. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009–2010, 64 episodes): This is the faithful adaptation of the full manga. It retells the same core story as the 2003 version but stays true to the original plot, characters, and ending. The brothers' journey to recover their bodies leads them into a massive conspiracy involving the military, homunculi (artificial humans), the Philosopher's Stone's dark origins, and the hidden truth behind the nation of Amestris. Brotherhood is generally considered the more complete and definitive version.

Both series blend action, adventure, tragedy, moral dilemmas, and deep world-building around alchemy (a science-magic system with equivalent exchange rules). The story explores themes of sacrifice, redemption, the cost of ambition, and what it means to be human.

Most fans recommend Brotherhood as the "true" version, while the 2003 series is loved for its unique tone and darker, more emotional ending. If you're new, start with Brotherhood for the full canon story.
