About Mei Chang

Mei Chang (also spelled May Chang) is a supporting character in the anime Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (the 2009 adaptation, which is the more faithful and widely regarded version compared to the 2003 series).

She is a young princess from the eastern country of Xing, around 11–12 years old, sent to Amestris on a secret mission to locate the secret of immortality (the Philosopher's Stone) for her clan. She travels with her loyal, talking panda-like chimera companion Shao May (Xiao Mei), who is tiny, cute, and often rides on her shoulder or head.

Appearance (in the anime): Mei is petite, with long dark hair styled in two buns on the sides of her head (with flowing strands), large expressive eyes, and traditional Xingese clothing (a flowing red and gold dress with intricate patterns).

Personality: She's extremely energetic, cheerful, optimistic, and a little naïve/childlike, often speaking in an overly polite and formal manner (with a strong sense of honor and etiquette). She's very kind-hearted, easily moved to tears, and deeply cares about helping people and animals. Despite her young age, she's a highly skilled alchemist who uses al-kahestry (Xing's unique form of alchemy), drawing transmutation circles with her hands or feet and manipulating chi (life energy) for powerful healing, barriers, and attacks.

Her arc involves searching for the Philosopher's Stone, developing a crush on Edward Elric (whom she calls "Big Brother Elric"), and gradually learning about the darker truths of alchemy and Amestris. She's a fan-favorite for her adorable, earnest nature and strong abilities despite her small size. (Voiced by Megumi Takamoto in Japanese and Luci Christian in English.)
