Fruits Basket (the 2019 remake, which faithfully adapts the full manga) is a heartfelt shōjo drama/romance with supernatural elements.
Quick synopsis: After the tragic death of her mother in a car accident, cheerful and kind-hearted high school girl Tohru Honda finds herself homeless. She secretly starts living in a tent on what turns out to be private land owned by the mysterious Sohma family. When discovered, she's taken in by Shigure Sohma (a laid-back writer) and his cousins Yuki (a popular, princely classmate of Tohru's) and Kyo (a hot-headed delinquent).
Tohru soon learns the Sohmas' big secret: 13 members of the family are cursed by the spirits of the Chinese zodiac (plus the cat, who was left out of the traditional zodiac). If they're hugged by someone of the opposite sex (or weakened/stressed), they transform into their respective zodiac animal (e.g., Yuki into a rat, Kyo into a cat).
The curse has caused generations of isolation, abuse, trauma, and family dysfunction within the Sohma clan. Tohru's unwavering optimism, empathy, and genuine kindness gradually start to heal the emotional wounds of the cursed family members she meets. The story explores deep themes like acceptance, breaking cycles of abuse, found family, grief, love (romantic and platonic), and what it means to truly belong.
It's emotional, often tear-jerking, but ultimately uplifting and hopeful. The 2019 version (3 seasons, 63 episodes) covers the complete story with beautiful animation and is widely praised as one of the best romance/drama anime out there.
