Akito Sohma is the head of the Sohma family and serves as the enigmatic, authoritative figure often referred to as the "God" of the Zodiac in the Fruits Basket anime (particularly the 2019 reboot, which aligns closely with the manga's portrayal).
In the anime, Akito appears as a frail, androgynous young adult (in their 20s) with short black hair, sharp purple eyes, and a pale complexion. They typically dress in layered or masculine-style clothing (such as robes or oversized garments) that conceals their figure and contributes to their ambiguous, commanding presence.
Akito is initially presented as short-tempered, controlling, possessive, and deeply feared by most Zodiac members due to their abusive and manipulative behavior toward them—both emotionally and sometimes physically. This stems from deep-seated insecurities, abandonment fears, and a twisted belief that the Zodiac belongs solely to them.
As the story progresses (especially in the later seasons of the 2019 series), more layers to Akito's character emerge through their backstory and interactions, revealing vulnerability, trauma, and eventual capacity for change and redemption—though they remain a complex, often antagonistic force for much of the series.
(Note: The 2001 anime adaptation presented Akito differently by keeping their gender ambiguous/male-coded throughout without the full reveal, but the 2019 version follows the manga's female identity more directly while still emphasizing the androgynous/masculine presentation early on.)
