Future Diary (also known as Mirai Nikki) is a dark, psychological thriller anime from 2011–2012, adapted from the manga by Sakae Esuno.
Quick synopsis: The story follows Yukiteru "Yuki" Amano, a shy, loner middle school student who has no real friends and obsessively records his daily observations in a cell phone diary. He frequently talks to what he believes are imaginary friends: Deus Ex Machina (the God of Time and Space) and his assistant Murmur.
One day, Deus reveals himself to be real and forces Yuki (along with 11 other people) into a deadly survival game called the Diary Game / Diary Holders Battle Royale. Each participant receives a special "Future Diary" — a cellphone that predicts future events related to its owner (different prediction styles for each). The goal: kill all the other diary holders. The last survivor becomes the successor to Deus and inherits his position as god of time and space (since Deus is dying).
Yuki reluctantly teams up with the obsessive, pink-haired Yuno Gasai (a classmate who is extremely attached to him — classic yandere archetype). Together they navigate betrayals, brutal fights, mind games, and increasingly twisted revelations while trying to survive against creative and dangerous opponents.
The series is packed with gore, intense action, psychological horror, massive plot twists, and a heavy focus on obsessive love, trauma, and moral ambiguity. It's often compared to Death Note or Battle Royale but with a heavier emphasis on yandere romance and supernatural elements.
Warning: It's very violent, contains graphic content, and explores dark themes — definitely not light viewing!
If you're into high-stakes survival games with crazy characters and unpredictable turns, it's a wild (and memorable) ride.
