Sailor Saturn (civilian identity: Hotaru Tomoe) is the last and most enigmatic of the Sailor Guardians introduced in the 1990s Sailor Moon anime, particularly prominent in the Sailor Moon S season and later arcs.
In her civilian form, Hotaru is a frail, quiet, and somewhat isolated young girl (initially appearing around middle-school age, though her age fluctuates due to plot events). She has short dark hair with a purplish tint, violet eyes, and very pale skin, often appearing delicate and sickly due to a mysterious illness and past trauma involving her father’s laboratory accident.
As Sailor Saturn, she is the Guardian of Silence, Destruction, Ruin, and Rebirth (or Death and Rebirth), tied to the planet Saturn. Her powers are dark and apocalyptic, she wields immense destructive force capable of annihilating entire worlds or even resetting existence if needed, symbolized by her Silence Glaive weapon. Her awakening typically signals an impending catastrophe, and she carries the heavy role of bringing an end when the time comes, though this can lead to renewal afterward.
Personality-wise, Hotaru herself is gentle, kind-hearted, intelligent, and cheerful in small ways (especially treasuring her friendship with Chibiusa), but she’s timid and has endured a lot of loneliness and suffering. When manifesting fully as Sailor Saturn, she becomes much colder, more resolute, and duty-bound, speaking with a sense of solemn inevitability about her role.
Her famous introduction line in the anime (especially in Sailor Stars) is along the lines of: "Protected by Saturn, the Planet of Silence, I am the Guardian of Ruin and Rebirth, Sailor Saturn!"
She's one of the Outer Senshi, feared yet ultimately protective, embodying themes of sacrifice, duality (destruction leading to rebirth), and quiet strength.
