Tuxedo Mask (known as Takishīdo Kamen in Japanese) is a key character in the 1990s Sailor Moon anime. His true identity is Mamoru Chiba, a tall, handsome young man with short black hair and blue eyes, who appears as a university/college student in his late teens/early twenties living in Tokyo.
In his heroic guise, he wears a classic formal black tuxedo (with white shirt, bow tie, and gloves), a red-lined black cape, a white mask covering his eyes, a top hat, and carries a cane. He often dramatically throws roses as weapons or distractions during battles.
In the anime version, Mamoru initially comes across as aloof, sarcastic, and a bit teasing—especially toward the clumsy protagonist Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon), whom he frequently calls "odango atama" (bun-head) due to her hairstyle. Despite this, he's deeply protective, kind-hearted, and brave. He frequently appears to aid the Sailor Guardians in fights against the Dark Kingdom and other enemies, offering encouragement, physical help (like shielding them), or using his rose attacks to turn the tide.
Driven by mysterious dreams and a quest for the Silver Crystal (to recover his lost memories from a childhood accident that killed his parents), he operates as a mysterious masked ally before his full connection to the story's past (as Prince Endymion) is revealed. Over the series, his relationship with Usagi evolves from banter-filled tension into a deep, devoted romance.
He's often remembered for his dramatic entrances, romantic proclamations, and role as Sailor Moon's steadfast supporter and love interest.
