Mael is one of the Four Archangels of the Goddess Clan in The Seven Deadly Sins anime (Nanatsu no Taizai). He is the younger brother of Ludociel (the leader of the archangels) and is considered the strongest among the Four Archangels, feared by the Demon Clan as the "Angel of Death" during the ancient Holy War 3,000 years ago.
He originally wielded the Grace of Sunshine (the same power later held by Escanor), granting him immense light- and sun-based abilities that peak dramatically around noon.
A major twist in the story reveals that Mael was forcibly given a new identity through a memory-altering spell cast by Gowther (the demon sorcerer) to shift the balance of the Holy War. This transformed him into Estarossa, a member of the Ten Commandments, the Demon King's supposed illegitimate son, and bearer of the Commandment of Love. As Estarossa, he appears as a tall, muscular man with short silver hair, black eyes, and a resemblance to Meliodas, acting as a ruthless antagonist for much of the series.
When his true identity as Mael is restored, he has long, curly silver hair, blue eyes, four angelic wings (two larger sets), and a very muscular build, often wearing a robe-like outfit. His personality is generally kind-hearted and moderate (especially in his true form), with a pacifistic side from his youth—he was once timid and unable to harm even insects, idolizing his brother Ludociel. He harbors deep remorse for past actions, particularly toward innocents, though he shows no mercy to demons, viewing them harshly due to his clan's influence.
Mael plays a pivotal role in the later seasons (especially in the revived Holy War arcs covered in seasons 4–5 of the anime), involving intense conflicts, power struggles with absorbed Commandments, and eventual alliances/redemption themes alongside the Seven Deadly Sins.
