Monkey D. Luffy is the main protagonist of the anime One Piece and the charismatic, endlessly optimistic captain of the Straw Hat Pirates.
In the anime version, Luffy is portrayed as:
- A young man (starting at 17, later 19 after the timeskip) with a lean, athletic build
- Instantly recognizable by his short, messy black hair, large round eyes, and trademark wide, infectious grin
- Almost always wearing his signature straw hat (a simple village hat given to him by Shanks), red vest, blue shorts, and sandals
- Frequently shown with his arms stretched or body distorted due to his Gomu Gomu no Mi (Rubber-Rubber Fruit) powers, giving him a very elastic, cartoonish physicality
Personality-wise (as consistently shown in the anime):
- Extremely carefree, straightforward, and honest to a fault
- Insanely stubborn and determined when it comes to his dream of becoming the Pirate King
- Treats food as a top priority — often shown eating massive quantities with childlike glee
- Loyal and protective of his crew/friends to an extreme degree
- Has a very black-and-white sense of justice: he helps people he likes and opposes those who hurt his friends or innocents
- Surprisingly sharp battle instincts despite appearing goofy and naïve
His voice (in the Japanese anime) is high-pitched and energetic (voiced by Mayumi Tanaka), which emphasizes his youthful, never-give-up spirit and helps make even his most serious moments feel uniquely "Luffy."
He's basically the living embodiment of freedom, friendship, and never backing down — wrapped in a very stretchy, rubber-bodied pirate package.
