The Apothecary Diaries

The Apothecary Diaries (original title: Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) is a historical mystery/drama anime set in a fictional empire inspired by imperial China (Tang dynasty vibes, with some later influences).

The story follows Maomao, a sharp-witted, poison-obsessed young apothecary who grew up working in the red-light district. She's kidnapped and sold into servitude in the emperor's vast inner palace (the Rear Palace), where concubines, maids, and eunuchs reside.

Trying to keep a low profile and just serve out her term to earn her freedom, Maomao can't help getting involved when she notices suspicious illnesses affecting the emperor's infants and concubines. Using her extensive knowledge of medicine, herbs, and poisons, she starts quietly solving medical mysteries and uncovering hidden schemes in the cutthroat court environment.

Her talents catch the eye of Jinshi, a handsome and influential (supposedly) eunuch administrator, who keeps pulling her into more cases—ranging from poisonings and curses to palace intrigue—while she reluctantly becomes the go-to "detective" for weird health and mystery problems.

It's a mix of episodic case-solving, slow-burn character development, subtle romance vibes, palace politics, and tons of fascinating historical/medical trivia, all wrapped in gorgeous art and a clever, deadpan protagonist who loves poisons more than people.

Super highly rated for its unique blend of mystery, historical drama, and humor! Season 1 covers the initial setup and many cases, with Season 2 (and beyond) continuing the story.
