Kanta Higurashi

Kanta Higurashi (日暮 莞太) is a key antagonist in the anime Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead. He is a former university acquaintance of the protagonist Akira Tendou and serves as a dark foil to him.

In the anime, Higurashi is portrayed as a former NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) who was deeply isolated, resentful, and envious of more outgoing people like Akira. The zombie apocalypse liberates him in a twisted way—he forms a small group of similarly disillusioned survivors and creates his own "bucket list" of destructive and criminal acts he wants to commit before turning into a zombie, including things like using guns, explosives, and unleashing chaos.

He harbors a long-standing grudge against Akira due to jealousy over his upbeat personality and perceived social ease (despite Akira's own struggles). This culminates in major confrontations, including an attack on survivors in Akira's hometown area (Gunma) and a personal hostage situation. His arc highlights themes of bitterness, missed connections, and what happens when freedom is interpreted through unchecked resentment.

Voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto (Japanese) and Bryce Papenbrook (English), Higurashi's character adds a tragic, antagonistic layer to the series' otherwise upbeat tone, with his story exploring isolation and the contrast between positive and negative responses to the end of societal constraints.
