Joey Wheeler

Joey Wheeler (known as Katsuya Jonouchi in the Japanese version) is one of the main characters in the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime and manga.

He's Yugi Muto's best friend and the group's tough, loyal, street-smart hothead. Joey starts off as a delinquent with a rough attitude and poor dueling skills, but he grows tremendously throughout the series into a skilled and courageous duelist who relies heavily on luck, determination, and warrior-themed cards.

Key traits:

• Personality: Loud, impulsive, fiercely protective of his friends, sarcastic, and has a strong sense of justice. He's also famously bad with money and often hungry.
• Signature cards: Red-Eyes Black Dragon (his most prized card), Time Wizard, Gilford the Lightning, and various warrior and gamble-themed monsters.
• Catchphrases / mannerisms: Heavy Brooklyn accent in the English dub ("nyeh," "in yo face!"), calls people "dweeb" or "loser," and frequently says things like "Take this!" during duels.
• Background: Comes from a broken home, has a younger sister (Serenity) whom he deeply cares for and enters major tournaments partly to help her get eye surgery.

He's generally portrayed as the heart and comic relief of the main group, but also proves himself as a legitimately strong duelist by the end of the original series.
