Natsuki Subaru

Natsuki Subaru is the main protagonist of Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World.

He is a Japanese hikikomori (reclusive shut-in) in his late teens who suddenly gets transported to a fantasy world. Upon arrival, he discovers he possesses a mysterious and extremely powerful ability called "Return by Death" — whenever he dies, time rewinds back to a specific "checkpoint" in the past, allowing him to retain his memories of previous loops while everyone else forgets what happened.

Personality-wise, Subaru is:

• Initially very talkative, cheeky, and overconfident
• Prone to making impulsive decisions and running his mouth
• Deeply caring and self-sacrificing (often to a self-destructive degree)
• Emotionally fragile and struggles heavily with trauma, guilt, and feelings of worthlessness as the story progresses
• Determined to protect the people he loves, especially Emilia

His journey is defined by repeated suffering, psychological growth, and learning the hard way that he isn't a typical overpowered isekai protagonist — his only real "cheat" ability comes at an immense mental and emotional cost.
