Nurugai

Nurugai is a key supporting character in the anime Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku (also known as Jigokuraku). She is the last surviving member of the Sanka tribe, a group of mountain-dwelling people considered heretics by the shogunate for refusing to submit to its authority.

Wrongly convicted and sentenced to death (despite committing no actual crime), Nurugai is recruited into the expedition to the mysterious island in search of the Elixir of Life, paired with the Yamada Asaemon executioner Tenza, who shows her compassion.

In the anime's depiction, she has a notably androgynous appearance that leads many (including some characters) to initially mistake her for a boy. She is short and youthful (around 12 years old), with dark tanned skin, long messy black hair often tied up, a rugged/wild look from her mountain upbringing (including going barefoot), scrappy clothing, and a muscular yet petite build suited to agility and speed.

Nurugai is portrayed as resilient, skilled in survival and combat (as a fragile speedster type—quick and evasive but not durable), and carries deep survivor's guilt from her tribe's fate. Her story explores themes like persecution, loss, and finding purpose amid tragedy, while forming a meaningful bond with Tenza that helps reignite her will to live.

She's voiced by Makoto Koichi in Japanese (with a tone that fits her tough, youthful energy) and Cassie Ewulu in English.
