About Merus

Merus is a key character introduced in Dragon Ball Super's Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga (also known as the Moro arc). In the anime adaptation, he initially appears as an elite member of the Galactic Patrol — specifically their top operative and a highly skilled, composed agent who oversees a large number of districts.

He first encounters Goku and Vegeta during a mission involving the capture of the dangerous criminal Moro. Merus demonstrates exceptional combat ability, agility, and technique, earning respect from even Vegeta for his prowess despite seeming like a regular (though extraordinarily capable) patrolman at first.

As the story progresses, Merus reveals his true nature: he is actually a trainee Angel (similar to Whis but lower in experience and rank), sent to Universe 7 to observe and learn about mortals. He has developed a strong sense of justice and attachment to the galaxy through his time with the Patrol, which conflicts with the Angels' usual strict neutrality.

Merus plays a major role in training Goku to regain and refine his Ultra Instinct form, emphasizing control, emotionless state, and mastery. He ultimately intervenes directly in the battle against Moro using his angelic powers (despite the taboo against Angels fighting or interfering), leading to dramatic consequences due to Angel laws.

He's portrayed as calm, modest, honorable, and deeply caring about protecting others — a refreshing addition to the series with ties to the angelic hierarchy (he's even Whis' younger brother in the lore). The anime keeps his arc focused on these themes of duty, growth, and sacrifice.
