Nanu

Nanu (known as Kuchinashi in Japanese) is a character in the Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon anime. He serves as the Island Kahuna of Ula'ula Island in the Alola region.

Appearance: He's depicted as an older man with gray hair, red eyes, thick eyebrows, and a generally laid-back, somewhat unkempt vibe. He typically wears a burgundy shirt under a black jacket (with yellow emblems suggesting his police background), long black pants, sandals, and a necklace featuring his Darkinium Z crystal.

Personality and role: Nanu is extremely laid-back, lazy, and cynical — he often avoids or downplays his duties as Kahuna unless something seriously threatens Ula'ula Island or its people. He specializes in Dark-type Pokémon and comes across as gloomy or world-weary, but he has a hidden compassionate side and can be surprisingly capable in battle when motivated. In the anime, he has a past connection to Team Rocket (including a personal acquaintance with Giovanni), though he left that life behind to become the Island Kahuna and a (rather unenthusiastic) police officer stationed on Ula'ula.

He interacts with Ash during the Ula'ula grand trial storyline, where his nonchalant attitude contrasts with his skill as a trainer.
