Morty

Morty (known as Matsuba in Japanese) is the Ecruteak City Gym Leader in the Johto region in the Pokémon anime. He specializes in Ghost-type Pokémon and awards the Fog Badge to trainers who defeat him.

In the anime, Morty is portrayed as a calm, kind, and level-headed young man with a deep interest in legends and legendary Pokémon (especially Ho-Oh and the beasts like Suicune). He studies these myths alongside his friend Eusine and has a strong sense of justice—he strongly dislikes people who steal Pokémon. Despite using spooky Ghost-types (like his main partner Gengar, plus Haunter and Gastly), he doesn't have the eerie or creepy personality many might expect; he's surprisingly mellow, friendly, and approachable.

He first appears in the episodes "A Ghost of a Chance" and "From Ghost to Ghost," where he battles Ash and initially doubts Ash's claims of seeing legendary Pokémon until seeing his pure heart during their Gym battle. Overall, he's depicted as a thoughtful, spiritual trainer who values righteousness and the mystical history of his city.
