Bertha

Bertha is a member of the Sinnoh Elite Four in the Pokémon anime (specifically appearing in Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl). She specializes in Ground-type Pokémon.

In the anime, she is portrayed as an elderly woman with a gentle, grandmotherly demeanor—mild-mannered, wise, and encouraging. She has gray hair styled similarly to Agatha from earlier series, emphasizing her age and experience. Bertha emphasizes the importance of observation and paying close attention to details in battles and everyday situations.

She appears in the episode "An Elite Coverup!" (DP170), where she mentors a young Trainer named Roland (or Ian in some dubs) and assists Ash, Dawn, Brock, and others in recovering a stolen Magby from Team Rocket. She drives competently (chasing after the villains) and later battles Ash using her Hippowdon (notably depicted as male in the anime), defeating his Torterra while teaching him about careful observation and strategy.

Unlike her more prominent role in the games, her anime appearance is limited to this single episode, focusing on her role as a helpful, observant Elite Four member rather than a full League battle.
