He serves as the protagonist Hiroshi "Hiro" Yuuki's childhood best friend and the older brother of another NPC, Alicia.

Affable and genuinely caring, Martin tries to dissuade Hiro from leaving their beginner town to adventure, using tough love that escalates into a fight—leading Hiro to accidentally kill him due to the game's hyper-realistic pain and consequences, earning Hiro the infamous "Best Friend Killer" title.

Martin's death haunts Hiro as a ghost, reminding him of a forgotten promise under the Kenura tree, until forgiveness allows Martin to pass on.
