Zeref Dragneel (also known as the Black Wizard or Emperor Spriggan) is one of the central antagonistic figures in Fairy Tail. He is widely regarded as the most powerful and evil mage in the series' history, feared for mastering forbidden Black Arts and creating deadly demons (including the Etherious race) through his Books of Zeref.
Despite his terrifying reputation, Zeref is a deeply tragic and complex character. He is an immortal human cursed by the god Ankhseram with an uncontrollable death magic that automatically kills living beings around him when he experiences strong emotions (especially affection or happiness). This curse, combined with his immortality, has caused centuries of suffering, isolation, and despair, leading him to view himself as a walking calamity who wishes for death.
He is revealed to be the older brother of Natsu Dragneel, the founder and former emperor of the Alvarez Empire, and has a profound romantic connection with Mavis Vermillion (Fairy Tail's first master). His actions often stem from a desire to end his curse and the cycle of pain it causes, though they frequently result in destruction and conflict.
In short, Zeref is far more of a tormented, conflicted immortal than a straightforward villain — calm, introspective, and burdened by immense power he never truly wanted.
