Kouta is one of the main characters in Elfen Lied.
He is a kind-hearted, gentle, and somewhat emotionally scarred young man in his late teens/early twenties. He lives alone in a large, old-fashioned Japanese inn that his family once owned (now mostly empty and run-down). Kouta is studying to become an artist/sculptor and has a very polite, soft-spoken, and caring personality.
He has a tragic past involving the violent death of his father and younger sister, which left him with deep psychological trauma, memory repression, and a strong aversion to violence. Despite this, he takes in Lucy/Nyu (the diclonius protagonist) without hesitation when he finds her injured and naked on the beach, showing his compassionate nature.
Kouta is often described as the emotional center and moral anchor of the story, though his kindness repeatedly puts him in danger.
