About Ox-King

Ox-King (also known as Gyūmaō or Ox Demon King in his more fearsome moments) is a supporting character in the Dragon Ball anime. He is the ruler of Fire Mountain (Mt. Frypan) and the father of Chi-Chi, making him Goku's father-in-law, as well as the maternal grandfather of Gohan and Goten.

In his debut during the early Dragon Ball series, he appears as an imposing, massive figure with a barbaric and menacing look — towering build, thick facial hair, bushy eyebrows, and often wielding an axe — while terrorizing the area around his mountain because his castle is trapped in uncontrollable flames (caused by a protective fire barrier gone wrong). This leads to his "Ox Demon King" moniker during that chaotic period.

Despite the intimidating name and initial appearance, Ox-King is actually a harmless, fun-loving, and deeply family-oriented guy at heart. He cares greatly for his daughter and later his grandchildren, often doting on them, buying presents, and trying to keep Chi-Chi out of trouble in various anime scenes and fillers.

He trained in martial arts alongside Grandpa Gohan under Master Roshi in his younger days, giving him considerable strength (with a noted power level around 900 in early Dragon Ball). As the series progresses into Dragon Ball Z and beyond, his role diminishes to more of a background/comic relief character, with occasional appearances supporting his family. His design softens over time too — later often seen in normal clothes and glasses rather than his early rugged look.
