Dende is a young Namekian introduced in the Dragon Ball Z anime during the Namek Saga. He's one of the 108 children (sons) of Grand Elder Guru and belongs to the Dragon Clan, which gives him special abilities unlike warrior-type Namekians.
In his initial appearance, Dende is portrayed as a gentle, soft-spoken, and quite shy child — peaceful by nature, timid, and not very talkative unless necessary. He's kind-hearted and sweet, often showing gratitude (especially toward Gohan and Krillin, who rescue him from Dodoria early on).
His standout ability is powerful healing, unlocked by Guru, which lets him instantly restore others from serious injuries (and even mend damaged clothing). This makes him extremely valuable support during the Frieza conflict on Namek, where he revives fallen allies multiple times.
Tragically, Frieza kills him in his final form to stop the healing, but Dende is later revived.
After the events on Namek, Goku specifically requests Dende to become Earth's new Guardian (replacing Kami after his fusion with Piccolo), a role he accepts. This lets him recreate and manage Earth's Dragon Balls (now tied to his life force). As Guardian, he matures somewhat — growing taller over time, adopting more composed guardian attire, and becoming more confident while remaining non-combative and supportive.
Overall in the anime, Dende is the ultimate non-fighter ally: a peaceful healer and Earth's divine overseer who aids the Z Fighters indirectly but crucially across sagas like Cell, Buu, and beyond. No combat prowess, but immense importance to the story!
